The East Timorese mountain Leolaco ( Foho Leolaco, Leo-Laco ) is located in Suco Dai-Sua ( administrative office Same , municipality of Manufahi ), south of the municipality capital Same and north of the river Aiasa .
history
In the early 20th century, the mountain served as the fortress of the Liurai of Manufahi. The fortifications consisted of trenches, stone walls and bamboo fences.
During the War of Manufahi , Dom Duarte successfully fended off repeated attacks by the Portuguese colonial troops from November 6th to 19th, 1900 . Weakened by illness, both sides agreed on a peace treaty on November 21, according to which Dom Duarte had to resign in favor of his son Boaventura .
In 1911 Boaventura also rose against the Portuguese. At the end of the Manufahi rebellion , more than 12,000 rebellious men, women and children were encircled by the Portuguese colonial troops in an area of 35 km² on the Leolaco. When attempted to break out between August 8 and 10, 1912, Boaventura escaped with thousands of his followers. More than 3,000 fighters and civilians who stayed behind are said to have been slaughtered by the Portuguese over the next two days and nights. It was one of the largest massacres in Portuguese colonial history .
