Leonhard Hutter (also: Hütter , often Latinized to Hutterus ; * January 1563 in Nellingen ; † October 23, 1616 in Wittenberg ) was a Lutheran theologian .

Life

Born as the son of the then pastor of Nellingen Leonhard Hutter, who later worked in Ulm, and his wife Anna Höflich, he began his studies in 1581 at the University of Strasbourg , where he studied for ten years. He continued his studies at the University of Leipzig , the University of Heidelberg and the University of Jena . In 1583 he obtained the academic degree of a master's degree in Strasbourg, under the deanery of Johannes Pappus, and received his doctorate in theology in Leipzig in 1594 .

There he gave private lectures and was appointed professor of theology at the University of Wittenberg in 1596 . There he was rector of the academy three times . He married Barbara Manlich in 1599, and the 16-year marriage did not result in any children. He died of a stroke at the age of 53 and was buried on October 25th.

His main work, the Compendium locorum theologicorum (for example: Handbook of Basic Theological Terms), was groundbreaking for generations of schoolchildren and theology students. It described the confessional Lutheran doctrine of the Book of Concord in a systematic, catechism-like manner. In 1609 it became the standard textbook for the three Saxon princely schools in Naumburg, Meißen and Grimma through a princely ordinance .

Even in the 19th century it was so well known that Karl von Hase gave his textbook on dogmatics the title Hutterus redivivus (the Hutter brought back to life).
