Leopold Damrosch

Leopold Damrosch (born October 22, 1832 in Posen , † February 15, 1885 in New York City ) was a German composer , conductor , violinist and music teacher .

Life

Damrosch, who came from a Jewish family, studied medicine in Berlin at the request of his parents , but at the same time continued his already passionate music studies. He took violin lessons from Hubert Ries and studied composition with Siegfried Wilhelm Dehn . After receiving his doctorate as a doctor (1854), he pursued an artistic career. As a violinist he made his successful debut in Magdeburg in 1855 and in Berlin in 1856. Soon afterwards Liszt called him to the grand ducal chapel in Weimar . In 1858 he became conductor of the orchestra club in Breslau and in 1866 conductor of the local theater.

He was a staunch supporter of the New German School and appeared as a conductor for Hector Berlioz , Richard Wagner and Liszt, whose music he also promoted as a writer in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik .

In 1872 Damrosch moved to New York, where he subsequently held a respected position as a conductor of the Arion Singing Society and the Oratorio Society (1873) and New York Symphony Society (1878), as well as a writer, violinist and singing teacher. He was a Freemason and in 1881 led the musical part of the great festival work on the centenary of the Grand Lodge of New York.

In 1858 Damrosch married the opera singer Helene von Heimburg (1836–1904). In addition to the three sons Richard, Ernst and Hans, who died in Germany as children, the couple had the following children:

  • Walter (January 30, 1862 - December 22, 1950), composer and conductor ∞ Margaret Blaine (1867–1949)
  • Marie († 1937) ∞ Ferdinand Wiechmann, chemist
  • Clara (1869–1948), pianist and music teacher ∞ David Mannes, violinist
  • Elizabeth (1872–1962) ∞ Henry T. Seymour (* July 24, 1860)

Among his numerous compositions, his songs (12 books), a violin concerto and some choral works ( Brautgesang , Ruth and Naemi ) are particularly worth mentioning.

monument

The sculptor Friedrich Helbig from Blasewitz near Dresden created the monument to the conductor of the German Opera in New York as his last major work.
