Leopold von Pebal (born December 29, 1826 in Seckau , † February 17, 1887 in Graz ) was an Austrian chemist .

life and work

Pebal studied law at the Graz University of Technology and only later chemistry. There he received his doctorate in 1851 and then stayed for research purposes with several greats of his time. From 1857 to 1865 he held the chemistry chair at the University of Lemberg and then moved to the University of Graz . There he set up the Graz Chemical Institute, which also served as a model for other universities such as Berlin, Zurich and Strasbourg.

Pebal's broad research area ranged from physical to organic chemistry . a. with electrochemistry , chlorine oxides and the chemistry of citric acid . In 1886 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Pebal was murdered by a laboratory technician in 1887. The Pebalstraße in Leoben is named after him, in the Graz district of Ries the Peball (!) Gone.
