Lepilaena is a genus of submerged (submersed) living plants inthe spawn family .

features

The species are submerged aquatic plants that are annual or relatively short-lived. They have slender rhizomes . The rungs are heavily branched and up to a meter long, especially in flowing water.

The leaves are alternate or almost opposite, have only one vascular bundle , are less than a millimeter wide and have a hollow or ligula- like leaf sheath .

The flowers are usually unisexual, the plants can be mono or dioecious . The flowers are axillary , individually or in groups. The male flower has a reduced perianth of three scales, the female flower has three membranous perianth segments and three free carpels.

The genus is common in inland waters in Australia and New Zealand.
