The lighthouse was built from red bricks as a round structure from 1847–1848 and was put into operation on January 1, 1849. Trial operations began on November 16, 1848. A keeper's house was built next to the tower. The lighthouse is one of the oldest on the German Baltic coast. It is 35.4 m high, the fire, amplified by headlamp lenses , is 33 m high. The fire has been operated electrically since 1936. It has the characteristic Fl (2 + 4) W 22s , which means two and four flashes every twenty-two seconds. The range of the light is 23 nautical miles . The lighthouse has been operated remotely since 1978. After the border was closed on August 13, 1961, access to the lighthouse was blocked in 1962. Only since March 1995 have visitors been able to climb the 134 steps to the viewing platform again. The lighthouse has more than 100,000 visitors a year.
At the foot of the lighthouse is the Natureum , a branch of the German Maritime Museum in Stralsund .
On June 7, 2018, the first day of issue, Deutsche Post AG issued a postage stamp with a face value of 45 euro cents with the motif of the lighthouse in the series Lighthouses . The design comes from the graphic designer Johannes Graf from Dortmund.
