Lewis Roberts (born July 2, 1985 ) is an English snooker player and cue maker from Stamford . In the 2008-09 season he played a year as a professional on the Snooker Main Tour .

Career

Paul Roberts, the father of Lewis, is one of the best cue makers in England. In the 1980s he began repairing cues and later developed his own play equipment and suitcases. Top players like Mark Selby and Ding Junhui are among his customers. His son learned to play snooker and was successful as a youth player at the local level. At the age of 18, Lewis Roberts took part for the first time as an amateur in the pre-qualification of the World Cup. He trained in Rushden, Hertfordshire , where he got tips for a professional career from Peter Ebdon , a customer of his father's. From 2005 he tried to qualify for the main tour. The first two years in the Pontin's International Open Series (PIOS) were still disappointing, with only four wins in total. In the first year he also played the Pontins Pro-Am tournaments in Prestatyn and had notable successes against, among others, Mark Davis and Barry Pinches . In one tournament he reached the quarterfinals. In the 2007/08 season he made a big leap in performance and after he had reached round 3 in the third tournament of the PIOS series, a semi-final, a quarter-final and again a semi-final followed. He didn't quite make it to the top of the tour standings, but 8th place was just enough to achieve professional status.

In the 2008/09 he started with a series of defeats. It was only in the preliminary round of the Masters Qualifying Event that he achieved his first win 4: 3 over Barry Pinches, but the tournament did not bring him any world ranking points . In the round of the last 32 he then lost to Fergal O'Brien . When he scored his first points at the China Open in early 2009 by defeating Vincent Muldoon , the season was almost over. At the world championship he also won again 10: 8 against Aditya Mehta and reached round 2, he did not get above 86th place among the 96 professionals, and he lost his professional status again.

The next year on the PIOS tour was as disappointing as his first two years and he gave up his professional ambitions for the time being. Instead, he got into his father's cue business, having already brought in his professional experience and his acquaintance with other professional players. Roberts is married to Irish snooker referee Patricia Murphy, who was the second female referee after Michaela Tabb on the professional tour in the 2000s .

In 2017, Lewis Roberts tried again to qualify for professional tours at the Q School at the age of 31 . In the first tournament he managed to win a few, including over ex-professional Andy Hicks , but in the quarterfinals it was over against Daniel Wards.
