history

Anarchist Book Fair in London 2006

The “Anarchist Book Fair” in London is one of the first libertarian book fairs in Europe. The first exhibition in 1983 was unsuccessful because the number of visitors was low, so the fair ended early and a pool tournament was held instead . The one-day “Anarchist Book Fair”, in which around 100 publishers, collectives, distributors and organizations take part, is attended by around 3,000 interested people, according to the organizer. A combination of booth presentations, lectures and workshops, it was the UK's largest anarchist event in 2006. In the meantime, several anarchist book fairs have sprung up in Great Britain and have given corresponding impulses for the German-speaking area. In the United States (USA) the “Bay Area Anarchist Bookfair” was founded in San Francisco in the mid-1990s. In 2010 it was carried out for the 14th time. This was followed by other anarchist book fairs in the USA and Canada, where an event takes place almost every weekend. Meanwhile there is also the "Anarchist Bookfair" in Mexico (Monterrey), Brazil (Sao Paulo), France (Paris), Slovenia (Ljubljana), Bulgaria (Sofia), Spain (Barcelona), Croatia (Zagreb), Portugal (Lisbon) and other.

In Europe, the libertarian media fairs began to make a name for themselves in early 2000. In 2002 the “Salon du livre libertaire” held a larger event in Paris, just a year later the “Encuentro del libro anarquista” in Madrid and the “Balkan Anarchist Bookfair” in Slovenia went public. The background to the European and international trade fairs was the large number of small libertarian publishers, collectives and distributors who had and still have on offer from magazines, brochures to several hundred-page works. In addition, the international libertarian book fairs could not only reach the anarchist audience, but also those interested in libertarian ideas, and the fairs also served “as a meeting point for the international libertarian movement”.
