The Liebfrauenschule Bensheim (short: LFS ) is one of five grammar schools in Bensheim an der Bergstrasse . The school is a Catholic private school of the Diocese of Mainz and a state-recognized high school for girls .

history

The former Oberhof. Left the Red Tower (steel engraving from 1882)

The building complex used today as a girls' high school goes back to the so-called Oberhof. This was the presumed residence of the Gemmingen family . In 1778 the Oberhof was owned by Baron Überbruck von Rodenstein , who sold it to the Bensheim councilor chisel. In the old documents it can be seen that the Oberhof was in the possession of the Higher Appeal Court Council Krebs. At an auction which passed now considered Krebs house designated buildings in the possession of as English lady called Mary Ward Sisters . In 1870 they had a three-storey extension, the so-called west wing, built and opened a boarding school for girls. In the following years, further expansion was carried out. So in the years 1885/86 a large southern extension with a built-in chapel, in 1907 a bridge connection to the Villa Nibelungenstrasse opposite and finally in 1911 the Neutor with stairs on Nibelungenstrasse. Another construction phase took place in 1912/13 with the construction of another new building to the west with a multi-purpose hall as a gymnasium and ballroom as well as a tower. The expansion came to an end for the time being in 1924 with the establishment of the little door room in Obergasse. Major renovations did not take place again until the 1950s before a new gymnasium was built in 1974. New buildings were then built in 1989 with the construction of the Maria Ward House, primarily for science classes, and in 1999 the Anne Frank Sports Hall.

The Nazis prohibited from 1936, the addition of new students before they could close in 1938 entirely to school. During the Second World War , the schoolhouse was used as a hospital from 1944 . The kindergarten, which had existed since 1863 and was run by the English Misses , was also taken over by the National Socialists in 1941 and continued under their direction.

After the end of the war, the sisters were able to reopen the kindergarten in 1945 and resume school in 1946 - now under the name Liebfrauenschule . In the same year, the first post-war high school diploma could be carried out.

The Maria Ward Sisters had to give up sponsorship of the school in 1978 due to financial difficulties. The diocese of Mainz took its place . The transfer agreement stipulated that the sisters would continue to be the head of the school for a transitional period, which was the case until 1989.

The school building (called the old school house , the former Oberhof) in Obergasse 38 is a registered cultural monument .

Todays use

As a degree, the pupils acquire the general university entrance qualification (Abitur). The school authority is the diocese of Mainz . In grades 5 and 6 there is an all-day school branch with afternoon classes and no homework supervision. Since the school year 2012/2013, the Liebfrauenschule has also been offering a secondary school branch, which offers the pupils the opportunity to change the school branch depending on their performance level. After completing the 10th grade, the secondary school students also have the chance to switch to the upper school level . Bridging courses are also offered in the 5th grade and at the end of the 6th grade between Realschule and Gymnasium. School fees are charged. The Liebfrauenschule Bensheim participates in various community projects, including Jugend forscht and the Comenius project. Even the dance sport is particularly encouraged at the LFS, it is rated as dancesport Stressed school .
