The Liebherr T 282 is a two-axle large dump truck for use in large open-cast mining . The T 282 has one of the most powerful drives in commercial vehicles . It is made in Newport News , Virginia .

Areas of application and development

The T 282 is a special open-pit mining vehicle for the removal of ores , coal and overburden with a maximum loading capacity of 364 tons. It is used in coal, gold, copper and diamond open-cast mining, but also to transport oil sands .

With the predecessor model T 262 with a maximum loading capacity of 218 tons, Liebherr had already had a large dump truck for opencast mining in its range since 1982. Due to the increased requirements, especially from very large opencast mines, a model with a significantly higher loading capacity was developed.

The size of the vehicle fleet in an open pit is usually only in the lower double-digit range. The vehicles usually run 24 hours a day. The failure of one or more vehicles therefore has a major impact on the output of a mine. Therefore, when developing the T 282, great emphasis was placed on high availability and reliability while at the same time reducing operating costs . All elements of the vehicle were designed to be largely maintenance-free. In 1999 the T 282 was presented to the public.

At the Bauma trade fair in Munich, five years later, Liebherr presented the new T 282 B model, which, as part of around 200 changes, combined in particular increased loading capacity with more powerful engine power and was first delivered in August of that year.

In 2016, Liebherr presented the T236, a smaller model with a loading capacity of 100 or 110 tonnes, at MINExpo.

Market position

A T 282 B costs around 3.5 million US dollars . In its market segment, the T 282 competes primarily with the 797 model from market leader Caterpillar as well as the Komatsu 930 and the Terex Unit Rig MT 6300AC introduced in 2007 . Other models of similar size have been announced by Hitachi, among others. The Belarusian manufacturer BelAZ presented the BelAZ-75710 in 2013 . Like all large dump trucks from Liebherr, the T 282 is also built at the Newport News plant. At the end of 2005, among the 711 ultra-class large dump trucks with more than 290 tons, there were 110 T 282s; at the end of June 2006, orders had been placed for a further 37 vehicles. Key customers are Codelco ( Chile ), Mt Arthur Coal (Australia), Syncrude (Canada), North Antelope Rochelle Mine (Wyoming) and the Cortez Gold Mine (United States).

The T 282 B is 14.5 meters long, 7.4 meters high and 8.8 meters wide, can load up to 364 tons, depending on the skip used, and has a total weight of a maximum of 592 tons. The vehicle reaches a top speed of 64 km / h. The wheels have a diameter of 4.11 meters and their weight is 7.8 tons. The average consumption is 174 liters of diesel per hour of operation, that's 4176 liters per day, the tank capacity of 4732 liters is enough for a little over 24 hours.

The trough , made of steel sheet a little over 20 millimeters thick, weighs 30 tons and can be raised to an angle of 45 degrees within 28 seconds. The welded box frame is stiffened in its cavities by additional elements. The control center, blower, switch boxes and driver's cab are located on a deck at the top of the vehicle, while the driver can monitor the traffic area by means of video cameras around the vehicle. The diesel engine and generator are located below the deck.

Braking systems

The T 282 B uses two complementary braking systems. A largely wear-free electrodynamic permanent brake with around 4480 kW (6030 hp) is used as the primary braking system . When activated, the drive motors act as electrical generators that convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy, which in turn is converted into heat by air-cooled resistors .

Drive system

The Liebherr T 282 B has a diesel-electric drive that eliminates the need for a clutch and manual gearbox , which means that weight and maintenance costs have been greatly reduced. The diesel engine drives a generator , which supplies two three-phase motors with electricity via electronic frequency converters . One of these motors is attached directly behind each wheel hub on the rear axle and drives one pair of wheels on the rear axle via a planetary gear .

This method enables a completely independent supply and control of the rear wheel pairs from one another, whereby the speed of each pair can be regulated separately. When the vehicle is cornering, the speed of the outer wheels is automatically increased or that of the inner wheels is reduced in order to protect the extremely expensive tires; a slip / slide control also guarantees directional stability by providing the necessary drive force for the individual rear wheel pairs.

Several models are available as diesel engines . The stronger version is an MTU DD 20V4000 built by MTU Friedrichshafen . The 10.5 ton engine has 20 cylinders and 90 liters displacement and, according to the factory, generates 2722  kW (3650  hp ). This makes it the most powerful drive machine used in a non-tracked land vehicle. Alternatively, a can Cummins - QSK-78 diesel engine is used, the cylinders 18 and 76 liters capacity 2610 kW (3500 hp) and weighs 11.3 metric tons.
