Liechtenstein's unofficial attempts to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest have occurred several times in the history of the country , most recently in 2010. The reason for their failure was always the lack of membership of a Liechtenstein broadcaster in the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). A first attempt was made for the 1976 contest . Since 2009, the Liechtenstein broadcaster 1FL TV has repeatedly tried to be accepted into the EBU and to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest. However, all of these attempts failed because of insufficient financial resources or other formalities.

Besides the Vatican, Liechtenstein is the only indisputably independent European state that has never participated in the Eurovision Song Contest .

history

In 1968 the title Un beau matin ("A beautiful morning") was published with the claim to be the official contribution of the country for 1969. However, it was a joke by a French comedian. Liechtenstein neither had a radio or television company, nor should a report have been submitted in French, as the rule was to only sing in the national language.

Participation was planned for 1976 with the interpreter Biggi Bachmann and the song My little Cowboy . However, participation failed because Liechtenstein had neither its own radio station nor a television company at the time.

On the national holiday on August 15, 2008, the first Liechtenstein television station 1FL TV went into operation. In October 2008 it became known that the broadcaster had determined the cost of membership in the EBU and that the budget at the time did not allow membership.

In July 2009 1FL TV stated that it now believed that it could meet the requirements and that it wanted to apply for membership in the same month. In September 2009, the broadcaster's managing director said that they had even been given the prospect of participating in 2010, but nothing had yet been finally decided. In November 2009, however, it was said that they wanted to “reconsider” the application. This made participation before 2011 impossible. They had no idea how to “quickly” raise the expected annual costs of 100,000 Swiss francs for membership and participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. They therefore did not want to dare to accept. It has now been agreed to wait six months.

In July 2010 it became known that 1FL TV would not receive any financial means for the ESC participation from the state media subsidy. Participation had previously been made dependent on this. However, it was now stated that participation could also take place independently of it. One is talking to potential cooperation partners and considering a big casting show. The 300,000 Swiss francs required for this are available. There were also talks with the producer Alexander Walser . An application for a special permit for immediate membership in the EBU was rejected by the latter in August 2010. Certain documents still have to be submitted and updated, said the station management. Participation in the ESC 2011 was no longer possible. In October, however, Svante Stockselius said that the rules had been changed and that institutions could now submit contributions that are in the process of being admitted to the EBU. In December 2010, 1FL TV's application for admission to the EBU was rejected. A few weeks earlier, media funding for the station was rejected.

In all competitions since 2012 , 1FL TV announced in advance that no participation was being sought in the respective year.

In November 2017, the broadcaster 1FLTV announced that it would take part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019 for the 300th anniversary of the Principality with its own preliminary decision. The hurdle for this planning remained the lack of membership in the EBU. The costs of around CHF 350,000 should be made available by Liechtenstein Marketing, foundations and the public sector. However, on July 20, 2018, the EBU confirmed that the broadcaster had not submitted an application for membership. On July 26, 2018, the broadcaster confirmed that it would not take part due to the sudden death of the broadcaster's boss Peter Kölbel.
