Saint-Martin de Ligugé abbey

Ligugé is a French municipality with 3349 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Poitiers and the canton of Poitiers-5 .

geography

Ligugé is located in the Poitiers metropolitan area , around eight kilometers south of the city. Neighboring municipalities are Poitiers in the north, Saint-Benoît in the northeast, Smarves in the east, Iteuil in the south, Marçay and Coulombiers in the southwest, Fontaine-le-Comte in the west and Croutelle in the northwest.

On the eastern edge of the municipality, the Clain river runs north, the municipality itself is drained by its tributaries Rau de Monplaisir and Menuse .

history

The city is known as the location of the Abbey of Saint-Martin de Ligugé , where Martin von Tours founded the first Western monastery in 361 .

Until 1789 Ligugé was part of the historical province of Poitou .
