Liljevalchs Konsthall ( Liljevalchs Kunsthalle ) is a contemporary art exhibition building on Djurgården in Stockholm .

description

The art gallery, which, unlike a museum, does not have its own collection, opened in March 1916 and was Sweden's first independent exhibition space for contemporary art. Before these artists had only barracks and dark dwellings available. It came about thanks to a donation from the industrialist Carl Fredrik Liljevalch dj (1837–1909). An architecture competition was announced and the architect Carl Bergsten (1879–1935) won first prize and was awarded the contract.

The exhibition hall is still exemplary. The main hall has a ceiling height of approx. 8.5 meters and is indirectly illuminated by a high row of windows facing west. The coffered ceiling is made of concrete . On the short side, the black steps stand out, almost like a sculpture , against the white wall. The building is completed to the south by an atrium . There is a well-frequented restaurant here. At the entrance to the Kunsthalle stands the sculpture "Archer" by Carl Milles on a high granite column . The building is considered a breakthrough in modern architecture in Sweden.

activities

In addition to various exhibitions, the so-called spring salon Liljevalchs vårssalong is an annual event. Liljevalchs Konsthall writes:

"The spring salon is Stockholm's surest herald of spring. To be there or not, that is the question for established or less established artists. And so it has been since April 21, 1921, when the first spring salon opened. The Spring Salon continues to be a serious exhibition forum, a cheeky arrangement that also shows other art movements than those that otherwise predominate in the minds of institutions and gallery owners.
