Liminka [ ˈlimiŋkɑ ] (Swedish Limingo ) is a municipality in northern Finland. It is located around 30 km south of the city of Oulu in the northern Ostrobothnian countryside . Liminka is exclusively Finnish-speaking.
overview
In addition to the parish village of Liminka, the main settlement areas are Alatemmes and Tupos . The municipality also includes the localities Heinijärvi, Hirvineva, Kedonperä, Ketunmaa, Kiiskilänkylä, Lapinkangas, Liminka, Rantakylä, Ritokorpi, Selkämaa, Tikkaperä and Virkkula.
The village of Liminka was founded around 1300 and is one of the oldest Finnish settlements in the region, which was inhabited by the semi-nomadic Sami until the early modern period . Since 1477 Liminka was the administrative center of a large area as a parish , which reached as far as the inner- Finnish Kajaani . In the centuries that followed, the Liminkes area became smaller and smaller, as many places, such as the later city of Oulu, became ecclesiastically and politically independent with growing population.
The church ( Carl Ludwig Engel ), built in neoclassical style, dates from 1826. The rectory is the largest in Finland.
Most of the community area is used for agriculture. Over the centuries, most of the forests have been cleared, and lakes and swamps have been drained.
The Liminganlahti bay named after the place is one of the most important bird areas in Finland. Among other things, the WWF maintains a control room here.
politics
Municipal council

The two other major parties in the country, the conservative National Collection Party and the Social Democrats, play a subordinate role with four and three seats respectively on the municipal council. Also represented in the municipal council are the right-wing populist True Finns and the left-wing alliance , each with three seats, as well as the Green Bund with one member.
