Linda Ronstadt
Linda Maria Ronstadt (* 15. July 1946 in Tucson , Arizona ) is an American West Basin and country rock - singer .
life and career
Her grandfather Federico Ronstadt was born in Sonora , Mexico in 1868 as the son of a German immigrant from Hanover who came to Tucson at the age of 14 to learn the craft of car building. He and his children played in various bands and composed songs.
The daughter of Gilbert Ronstadt (1911–1995) and Ruth Mary Copeman Ronstadt (1914–1982) began her career in the mid-1960s in the folk club The Troubadour in West Hollywood . With the folk formation The Stone Poneys , she had her first hit, Different Drum , in 1967 , written by Michael Nesmith of the Monkees . Her first solo hit was the country rock song Long Long Time in 1970 , but she also took part in the oratorio Escalator over the Hill with the ensemble of jazz pianist and composer Carla Bley . At the beginning, their backing band consisted of Don Henley , Glenn Frey , Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner , the later Eagles .
Linda Ronstadt had her greatest success in the 1970s and received a number of platinum awards . Her albums Heart Like a Wheel (1974), originally a hit by Kate McGarrigle , Hasten Down the Wind , Simple Dreams and Living in the USA , scored six number 1s on the US Billboard and country album charts. including the song You're No Good . Heart Like a Wheel from 1974 is considered her most important album. In the late 1970s, she was dating Jerry Brown , the then governor of California . With a cover of the Rolling Stones song Tumbling Dice , she achieved a top 40 hit in 1978. Her album Canciones de mi padre comes from a collection of songs by her aunt Luise, who in 1930 brought out a book entitled "Canciones de mi Padre".
Ronstadt made numerous pop rock hits - such as B. a cover version of Roy Orbison's Blue Bayou and duets with Aaron Neville - in the course of her career recordings of many musical styles, from big band sound to Mexican folk music to an album with rock classics in the form of lullabies with the title Dedicated to the One I Love , which u. a. Contains a version of the Queen classic We Will Rock You . She can also be heard as a background singer on various Neil Young albums and has often been a guest singer with other bands and performers, for example the Eagles , the Chieftains and Nicolette Larson.
In cooperation with Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton , the Country- Album Trio was created in 1987 , followed by the album Trio II in 1999 . For the film Mambo Kings she sang two tracks arranged by Ray Santos , who then also arranged her album Frenesi with Latin American standards, which was awarded the 1992 Grammy for "Best Tropical Latin Album".
When she showed her support for filmmaker and Bush critic Michael Moore at a concert in Las Vegas, she was booed for it. Before the encore, she had described Moore as a "great American patriot" and someone "who spreads the truth." She called on the Aladdin hotel-casino audience to watch Moore's documentary on President George W. Bush , Fahrenheit 9/11 . Some of the 4,500 spectators stormed out of the hall, others tore off concert posters. Ronstadt also expressed himself politically in other cases. She spoke out against the deportation of illegal migrants back to Mexico. In 2010 she participated in a lawsuit against the stricter deportation rules planned in Arizona.
In August 2013, the singer announced that she had had Parkinson's disease for several years and could no longer sing. She declared her musical career ended. Nevertheless, Ronstadt has not yet completely withdrawn from the public. Her autobiography Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir was published in September 2013. In September 2019 followed a documentary about her life with the title Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice , which was awarded as "best documentary" at the Provincetown International Film Festival.
