The Lindenberg is an elongated mountain ridge in the central Swiss plateau . It belongs to the cantons of Lucerne (west side) and Aargau (east side and north cover), the border mostly runs on the ridge.

geology

The 20 km long and up to 8 km wide, barely structured ridge stretches in a north-northwest-south-southeast direction. It is bordered in the west by the Seetal with the Hallwilersee and the Baldeggersee , in the east by the Bünztal , in the south by the Reuss valley and in the north by the Sarmenstorf depression . The latter separates the Lindenberg from the northwestern adjoining height of the Rietenberg . The highest elevation of the Lindenberg reaches 878  m above sea level. M. in the Rüedikerwald , large other areas are also over 800  m .

The range of hills is mainly made of molasse sandstone . End and lateral moraines of the various stages of the Ice Age Reuss Glacier lie on the slopes ; the upper part of the ridge was free of ice in the last Ice Age. In the former moraine area, there used to be a lot of glacier boulders , which were almost entirely used for construction purposes in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Beinwil and Wiggwil there are well troughs, well sticks and wayside crosses made of Aare granite from the Alps in the Reuss Valley. At Auw , an artificial row of stones made of boulders was erected in the forest in an unknown time.

The only valley cut deep into the western slope of the mountain is the Gitzitobel, which enters the Seetal near Aesch . The headwaters of the Bünz are located south of Muri on the eastern slope of the Lindenberg . In the vicinity of Beinwil, several source streams such as the Wissenbach , the Sembach and the Mariahaldenbach arise from the moraine courses on the slope .

The ridge of the Lindenberg is forest-covered, on the wide open slopes are agricultural areas, where mainly cattle and fruit-growing are practiced.

Economical meaning

There are several municipalities ( Bettwil , Schongau , Hämikon , Müswangen , Sulz , Lieli and Hohenrain ) on the high terraces on the western slope of the Lindenberg . They used to be farming villages, but in recent years numerous new residential areas have been added due to the promising location.

A popular excursion destination with an alpine panorama is Horben Castle on the southeast side of the ridge. There, in winter, when there is enough snow, three cross- country trails are groomed and a short ski lift is put into operation. Above Buttwil , on the eastern slope of the Lindenberg, there is a sports airfield on a terrace in front.
