biography

Hoyle is the son of Doug Hoyle, Baron Hoyle , who sits in the House of Lords , and Pauline Spencer.

He married Lynda Anne Fowler; the marriage was divorced in 1982. In 1993 he married Catherine Swindley, whom he employed as a part-time secretary. He has two daughters from his second marriage. Before going into politics, Hoyle was an entrepreneur in the textile industry.

Between 1980 and 1998 he was active as a local politician and a member of the council of Borough Chorley . In the general election in 1997, Hoyle won the seat of Parliament for Chorley as a Labor Party candidate, and he was able to successfully defend the mandate in the subsequent elections. In 2010 Hoyle became deputy speaker , Chairman of Ways and Means , and in 2013 a member of the Privy Council . Politically, he campaigned, among other things, for the memory of Diana, Princess of Wales and was positively noticed during the budget negotiations. In January 2018 he was beaten to a Knight Bachelor degree and has had the addition of "Sir" since then.

After John Bercow's announcement that he was stepping down as speaker on October 31, 2019, Hoyle was considered a promising candidate and was able to prevail over six other candidates in the election for Speaker of the House of Commons 2019 on November 4. He was elected to succeed John Bercow as Speaker of the House of Commons and was appointed by the Queen that same day.

He is one of the MPs whose voting behavior in the 2016 EU exit referendum is unknown. In October 2019, Hoyle caused a stir when he stated that there were problems in the House of Commons regarding alcoholism and drug abuse.

Hoyle lives in Chorley and is a supporter of the Bolton Wanderers football club .
