Lionel Bart , actually Lionel companion , (* 1. August 1930 in London , England ; † 3. April 1999 ) was a British musical - composer . The most famous musical from his pen is Oliver! (1960) based on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens .

Life

Despite his early musical talent, Bart never learned to write notes. After his military service he tried different jobs and was active in the communist party. He also wrote songs for a radio program. In 1956 he saw a gig by Tommy Hicks and persuaded him to join the band The Cavemen . Bart also got managers for the project, John Kennedy and Larry Parnes . They made rock 'n' roll careers as Tommy Steele & The Steelmen .

In addition to his activities with Tommy Steele, Bart wrote musicals. Oliver! was performed 2618 times in London from 1960. It then ran 774 times on Broadway and was made into a film by Carol Reed in 1968 . Another musical by Lionel Bart was Twang !! (1965), which flopped and led to Bart's financial ruin. He became depressed and addicted to alcohol. He also suffered from diabetes . In the 1980s he got back on his feet and worked on musical productions again, in 1999 he died of cancer. He was in the Golders Green Crematorium in London cremated , where his ashes is located.
