List of officials of the two-city office Bergedorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Councilmen of the two Hanseatic cities were alternately appointed as officials of the two-city office of Bergedorf , which had jointly administered Hamburg and Lübeck since 1420 . The seat of the bailiff was Bergedorf Castle . In 1868, the two-city administration ended with the transfer of Lübeck ownership rights to Hamburg and the conversion of the office to the Bergedorf estate .

Terms of office

Initially, the cities alternated with the administration of the area every four years, from 1446 every six years. From 1620 the respective bailiffs exercised their office for life - also alternately. It was not until 1867 that the city of Hamburg bought half of its share from the city of Lübeck for 200,000 Prussian thalers. On January 1, 1868, the 400-year-old condominium (dual power) came to an end and Bergedorf became part of the city of Hamburg.
