List of paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder
The list of paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder contains, with over forty known and preserved works, all paintings attributed to this painter of the Dutch Renaissance . In addition, Bruegel created a number of drawings , engravings and engravings .
background
Bruegel created most of his paintings with oil paints on wooden panels; he rarely used tempera as paint or canvas as a paint medium. Many of the pictures show motifs from rural life, which earned the artist the nickname “Bauernbruegel”. Landscapes, biblical themes, and the visual rendering of idioms are also common. The large-format pictures in particular are known for their wealth of detail.
The majority of the painting is with the last name of the artist signed and provided with a number of years. The spelling of the name varies. Until 1559 the artist signed mostly with "Brueghel", often in Gothic minuscule . Then he left out the "h" and wrote in Roman capital letters: "BRVEGEL". If the date is missing, an exact chronological classification of the work is rarely possible. The earliest known and dated painting is from 1553; earlier painting by Bruegel on the altar of the glove makers guild of Mechelen from 1551 is documented but not preserved.
Little is known about Bruegel's life. His date of birth is believed to be between 1525 and 1530, he died in 1569. He is considered to be the founder of a school of artists to which his two sons Pieter the Younger (1564–1638) and Jan (1568–1625) belonged. Pieter the Younger, later called “Höllenbrueghel”, took over his father's workshop material and produced “almost factory-like” copies of his father's compositions. For example, well over a hundred reproductions from his son's painting business are known of his winter landscape with ice skaters and bird trap . Many of the copies are neither signed nor dated. Pieter the Younger also signed with “BRVEGEL”, from around 1620 with “BRVEGHEL”; Jan also used both spellings. As a result, the authorship of some paintings is uncertain, even if they are signed, and it is precisely the differentiation between older and younger Pieter that can cause difficulties for art historians.
The surviving paintings by Bruegel are today almost exclusively in museums, only a few works are in private ownership. Most recently, the painting The Wine for the Feast of Saint Martin became known in 2010 after a private collector had given it to the Prado for restoration . The museum then acquired the picture.
Lost paintings by Bruegel are not included in the list, as little is known about them. For example, the provenance of the five well-known seasonal pictures indicates that this series once consisted of six parts. However, details of the missing image are not known. In other cases there are copies of imitators of Bruegel, from which it is concluded that an original has been lost. For example, there are two paintings in the Philadelphia Museum of Art , The Unfaithful Shepherd and a variation of the Peasant Wedding , which are believed to have originated from Bruegel.
list
Works with controversial authorship are highlighted in gray in the following table; some examples of changed attributions are listed in a second table below.
The column No. indicates the catalog numbers under which a painting is listed in a catalog raisonné. "MS" names the list of Marijnisse and Seidel , see section Literature . A dash “-” indicates that a painting was not included in a directory.
