List of number one hits in the UK charts
The number-one hits in the music industry in the UK have been identified over the years by various companies. The hit lists are currently being compiled by the Official UK Charts Company and their lists are considered the "official British charts ".
For older dates, they fall back on the standard work "Guinness Book of British Hit Singles". This list is based on the charts published in the New Musical Express magazine up to and including February 26, 1960 . Then the lists of the Record Retailer (now Music Week ) were used, which have also been the official BBC charts since 1969 .
The Christmas number one hits have a particularly high priority .

From November 6, 1953 to January 6, 1954, the song " Answer Me ", composed by Gerhard Winkler and known in Germany as " Mütterlein " and " Glaube mir ", was on in versions by David Whitfield and Frankie Laine , partly together the first place. The song came in ninth place in 1976 in a version by Barbara Dickson .
