List of towns and municipalities with names added in North Rhine-Westphalia

The list of cities and municipalities with a name suffix in North Rhine-Westphalia contains municipalities that have applied for and approved a name suffix for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in accordance with Section 13 (3) of the municipal code for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

In October 2011, the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia adapted the municipal and district regulations so that official designations are now allowed that refer to the history or today's importance of municipalities and districts . With a majority of three quarters of the members, the councils and district assemblies can determine a designation and apply to the Ministry of Interior and Local Affairs . After approval, the addition is considered the official name, must be listed in the main statutes and must be used in official correspondence. The adjustment of entrance boards is optional.

Rejected additions to names

The addition "Europe's combine harvester town" for Harsewinkel was initially rejected in June 2013 by the Ministry of the Interior and Local Affairs. In an urgent procedure, the council and the ministry then agreed on "The combine harvester town".
