  • Since the Academy Awards in 1948 , a foreign language film has been honored every year at the Oscars . From 1948 to 1956, this took place in the form of a special or honorary Oscar. A separate category with five nominations, as in the other regular categories, was only created in 1957.

There is a strong trend towards awards for European films, especially films in Romansh (Italian, French, Spanish). In the last decade in particular, more and more films from Latin America , Asia and Eastern Europe have been nominated or awarded.
