Jordan , whose NOK , al-Ladschna al-ulimbiyya al-urdunniyya , was founded in 1957 andrecognizedby the IOC in1963, has participated in the Summer Olympics since 1980. So far, no athletes have been sent to the Winter Games. Young athletes have taken part in both of the youth summer games that have been held so far.

Haya bint al-Hussein

Jordan's first Olympic team consisted of four sport shooters in 1980. At the following summer games, Jordanian athletes competed in athletics and fencing (since 1984), boxing, wrestling, archery and table tennis (since 1988), swimming (since 1996), taekwondo and horse riding (since 2000) as well as in judo and triathlon (since 2016).

The first Olympians in Jordan were the two trap shooters Mohamed Issa Shahin and Nader George Shalhoub on July 20, 1980. On August 8, 1984, the athlete Raida Abdallah Bader became the first woman from Jordan to take part in the Olympic Games.

In Sydney 2000, the show jumper Haya bint al-Hussein, a daughter of the Jordanian King Hussein I , who died the year before, took part. The first sporting successes came in 2004 in Taekwondo. In the heavyweight division, Ibrahim Kamal had advanced to the semi-finals. Against the Greek Alexandros Nikolaidis he lost 3: 6 on points. He also lost the battle for bronze against the French Pascal Gentil on points.

In the 2016 tournament in Rio de Janeiro, the featherweight Ahmad Abughaush became the first Jordanian medalist and Olympic champion in his country after winning points over the Russian Alexei Denissenko .

Youth games

Six young athletes, four boys and two girls, competed in badminton, gymnastics, swimming and taekwondo at the first 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore . Two medals could be won in Taekwondo. In the boys 'category, Yazan Alsadeq won bronze in the super heavyweight division, in the girls' category Dana Touran won silver in the featherweight division.

In 2014 in Nanjing , six athletes, two boys and four girls, took part. They competed in fencing, swimming, gymnastics and taekwondo. Medals could not be won.

IOC members

Jordan currently has one IOC member. In 2010, Faisal bin Al Hussein , second son of the late King Hussein I, was elected an IOC member. He is a member of the Commission for Public Relations and Social Development and the Coordination Commission for the 32nd Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.
