Virginia Livia Frege , b. Gerhardt (born June 13, 1818 in Gera ; † August 22, 1891 in Abtnaundorf ) was a German singer (soprano) and patroness .

Life

Livia Frege trained as a soprano with Christian August Pohlenz . She is considered the queen of Leipzig's romantic song singing.

She made her debut in 1832 at the age of 15 in the Leipzig Gewandhaus at a concert by Clara Wieck , who later became Robert Schumann's wife . In 1835 she was engaged at the Royal Opera in Berlin , but after her marriage in 1836 with the lawyer Woldemar Frege she returned to Leipzig . She was friends with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , Robert Schumann and Ferdinand David . She was also in a lively correspondence with Franz Liszt .

Freges lived on Georgiring, a choir with 50 members regularly gathered in their house to sing with Livia Frege.

Liviastrasse in Leipzig's Waldstrasse district was named after her in 1889.
