LivrÉchange (pun from French livre + échange , German book + exchange ) is an intercultural , freely accessible library in the city of Freiburg i. Üe. whose main purpose is to integrate the foreign language population and expand the cultural identity of the region. There are over 25,000 titles available in over 265 languages.

Stock and offers

Under 25,000 titles are picture books for children of preschool age, books for children and young people and books for adults. In addition to fiction, the library has non-fiction books, encyclopedias and textbooks in printed and digital form. The inventory can also be queried online.

LivrÉchange is also a meeting place where foreigners and locals of all ages can meet. In addition, the library is educationally active: it welcomes school classes, organizes cultural events such as fairy tale hours, readings, exhibitions, lectures and guided tours. In addition, users are offered a large selection of pre-installed, free language learning programs and links to language learning programs for German and French for beginners and advanced learners on three computers.

LivrÉchange takes its offer to various parts of the city - in summer even to the swimming pool - where volunteers lend the children present books, tell or read stories in different languages, draw, do handicrafts with them and talk about them. In the meantime, the parents can get to know each other.

history

The LivrÉchange association was founded in 2001 as a politically and denominationally independent, non-profit association in Freiburg. In May of the following year, the first intercultural library in the canton of Friborg was opened on Rue de Botzet in Friborg. The Caritas Freiburg, the premises free of charge. The offer mainly consisted of second-hand books in foreign languages. The intercultural library has been a member of the Freiburg library network since 2004. In August 2008, the intercultural library, which had grown significantly, moved to its current location on Avenue du Midi near the Freiburg train station . This enabled the activities to be expanded significantly.

financing

The library is financially supported by the state and the church (municipalities, canton, federal government and church), by private individuals (foundations, lottery) as well as through membership fees and donations. Numerous volunteers reduce the financial needs significantly through their commitment.
