The Lobéké National Park is a national park in southeast Cameroon . The park is part of the Congo Basin .

history

As early as 1991, the WWF prepared a biological report that recommended protecting the Lobéké area. In October 1999, the 2178 km² park was declared a national park. The Cameroonian government has recognized the WWF's long-term efforts to protect the area. In the same year the so-called Yaoundé Declaration was signed. The tri-national Sangha Park , often referred to as the Peace Park , was created through the cooperation . Lobéké is part of this cooperation, which covers a total of 14,381 km².

On July 3, 2012, the Lobéké National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Sangha Trinational World Heritage Site .

geography

Lobéke belongs to the Moloundou district .

Tri-National de la Sangha as a
Transfrontier Conservations Area spanning three states

The park is located in the Boumba and Ngoko area. Due to its proximity to the neighboring countries of the Republic of the Congo and Central African Republic , the park is part of a trinational environmental protection initiative with the Sangha as the border river in the center of the protected area. The initiative also includes the Dzanga Sangha Forest Reserve and the 1143 km² Dzanga Ndoki National Park (Central African Republic) and the Nouabalé Ndoki National Park ( NouabalÚ-Ndoki , 4190 km²) supplemented by the Nouable Ndoki Conservation Area (Republic of the Congo).

flora

The flora of the park consists of semi-deciduous evergreens and scrub forest . The forest is characterized by an enormous variety of plants.

Among the trees used commercially are abachi , sapeli, and azobe . At least 300 different tree species are found in the entire area.

As is often the case in developing countries, deforestation is a major problem. Lots of illegally harvested tropical timber land in Douala every day for shipping .

fauna

Lobéké is home to the so-called charismatic megafauna . In the forest you can find forest elephants , gorillas , chimpanzees , large white-nosed monkeys , gray-cheeked monkeys , giant forest pigs , brush-eared pigs , yellow-headed ducks and bongos .

The avifauna is considerable. More than 283 bird species have been inventoried. There are significant numbers of African gray parrots . You can also find the rare red-nosed green pigeon ( Treron calvus ) and rhinoceros birds ( Buceros rhinoceros ). You can also observe the yellow-throated cuckoo ( Chrysococcyx flavigularis ), the yellow-billed owl ( Otus icterorhynchus ) and the chestnut-tree ( Halcyon badia ) in the reserve .

Illegal parrot fishing or bird poaching is a major problem. Several thousand African gray parrots are caught and illegally exported every year.

There is also an exceptional herpetofauna in the reserve . On Lobéké Lake there are among other crocodiles .

population

Various ethnic groups live in Lobéké, including the Baka , Bangando and Bakwelle .

There is also the Bantu ethnic group and immigrant groups.

Due to the expropriation of the indigenous population without compensation or showing a perspective, the native population is becoming increasingly impoverished.
