Lorenzo Celsi
Lorenzo Celsi (* 1st decade of the 14th century in Venice ; † July 18, 1365 ibid) was the 58th Doge of Venice . He ruled from 1361 to 1365.
Political career, family
Celsi had distinguished himself in the military and political fields. Before his election he was Ambassador, Podestà in Treviso and Captain General in Istria .
He was married and had two daughters.
The Doge's Office
Both Petrarch and the Venetian historian Sanudo have handed down many colorful stories from Celsi . He is said to have been an extraordinarily splendor-loving doge, a long list of pieces of jewelry and jewels is handed down in his will. He is said to have kept wild animals, exotic birds and a whole stable of noble horses in the Doge's Palace . At public events, he appears dressed in white, while his predecessors were usually dressed in red. He had tournaments held on St. Mark's Square , and was a passionate tournament fighter himself. He is said to have marked his Corno with a cross so that everyone was forced to greet him, and finally he had a kind of scepter carried over to him at public appearances . He did not live to see the outcome of such proceedings before the Grand Council .
Such a personality cult and extravagant behavior were later attempted to stop with an ever more stringent promissio , in which the doges were prescribed their duties and rights and read them out repeatedly.
Tomb
The Doge was buried in the Santa Celestia Church, which was destroyed when the arsenal was expanded . Nothing remains of his tomb.
