Lothaire Bluteau (born April 14, 1957 in Montreal , Québec ) is a Canadian actor .

Life and accomplishments

Bluteau attended the Montreal Conservatory of Dramatic Arts and also studied medicine. In his hometown he appeared in the theater . His career breakthrough came with the title role in the film Jesus von Montreal (1989) about the Passion of the Christ, which was nominated in 1990 for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film . For this film drama directed by Denys Arcand , Bluteau won a Genie Award for Best Actor in 1990 .

He first appeared in the play Being at Home with Claude in Canada and in 1991 in London . He played the main role of a homosexual prostitute who killed his lover. For this performance he was awarded the following prizes: the Grand Prize of the Theater Critics of Quebec , 1984, the Critics' Prize of the Association of Theater Critics of Quebec , 1984, and the Time Out Public Award . In 1996 he was theater director in the play User's Waltz in New York City .

In the literary film adaptation of Black Robe (1991) by Bruce Beresford , Bluteau played a French Jesuit on a mission with the Canadian Indians. The Australian Film Institute nominated him for the AFI Award for Best Actor in 1991 . In 1992 he played a supporting role in the two-time Oscar-nominated film adaptation of the novel Orlando by author Virginia Woolf . In 1996, Confessionnal received a Genie Award nomination for best actor . In 1997, the Gijón International Film Festival recognized him as best actor for the film drama Bent . In 2002 he was in the city of New York in the play The resistible rise of Arturo Ui by Bertolt Brecht on stage. In 2004 Bluteau played the role of the Austrian terrorist Marcus Alvers in five episodes of the third season of the real-time series 24 with Kiefer Sutherland . In his professional career so far, he has brought around 40 characters to life in French and English in front of the camera.
