Lothar Ruppert

Lothar Ruppert (born March 23, 1933 in Neuenberg near Fulda ; † September 17, 2011 in Fulda) was a Roman Catholic theologian. He was Professor of Exegesis of the Old Testament at the Theological Faculty of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1953 at the Rabanus-Maurus School in Fulda , he studied theology and philosophy in Fulda and Würzburg. Lothar Ruppert was ordained a priest on April 2, 1960 in Fulda by Bishop Adolf Bolte . After two years as a chaplain , he continued his theological and biblical studies at the University of Würzburg and received his doctorate in theology in 1964 with the thesis "The Joseph story of Genesis - A contribution to the theology of the Pentateuch sources" . From 1964 to 1968 he was a research assistant at the theological seminar of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . After a research stay at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome , Lothar Ruppert completed his habilitation in 1970 at the Theological Faculty of the University of Würzburg as a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation with the text “Passio iusti. An investigation into the history of the subject of the Old Testament and Inter-Testament Judaism. ”And received the venia legendi for the subject“ Old Testament Exegesis and Biblical-Oriental Languages ​​”. He initially held a teaching position at the Fulda theological faculty , later also at the Würzburg University and at the Catholic Theological Seminary in Marburg.

1971 Lothar Ruppert received a call to the professor for Old Testament exegesis at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the fledgling University of Bochum . From here he moved to the theological faculty of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in 1984 , where he headed the department of Old Testament literature and exegesis as full professor until his retirement in 1998 .

Act

A special focus of his scientific work was the Pentateuch research and especially the book Genesis . Other research focuses were the Old Testament history of motifs and the theology of the writings of the prophets, the psalms and writings of the late testament, especially the “Book of Wisdom”, but also the early Jewish apocrypha including the Qumran scripts and the etymology and semantics of Hebrew words.

Ruppert has published numerous scientific papers, including "The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church". He was the doctoral supervisor of Bernd Willmes and Friedrich Diedrich, among others .

From 1980 to 2007 he was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Johann Adam Möhler Institute for Ecumenism in Paderborn and from 1988 to 2001 a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission .
