Lothar Schultes

Lothar Schultes (* 1955 in Mistelbach , Lower Austria) is an Austrian art historian and artist .

Life

Lothar Schultes graduated from high school in St. Pölten and then studied sculpture in the Wander Bertoni master class at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and art history and archeology at the University of Vienna , where he was also a study assistant from 1979-81. In 1982 he did his doctorate under Gerhard Schmidt on the subject: Austria's share in the development of beautiful style sculpture.

In 1983/84 he worked at the Austrian Belvedere Gallery . Afterwards he was a teacher at the Higher Federal Graphical Teaching and Research Institute in Vienna . Since 1985 he has worked at the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz . Here he heads the Art History Collection and the Decorative Arts Collection. In 1989/90 and 2005/06 he taught at the University of Graz . From 1995 to 2002 he held a lectureship in medieval art history at the Linz Art University .

Lothar Schultes designed many exhibitions and wrote numerous publications on art from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. In 2002 he headed the nationwide project Gotik Schätze Upper Austria . He works on the history of fine arts in Austria , the Dictionary of Art, the General Artist Lexicon , the Austrian Biographical Lexicon and the Upper Austria Archive. On the occasion of the Capital of Culture year, he curated the exhibition Sehnsucht Natur in Vilnius and in the Linz Castle Museum . Landscapes of Europe . Last exhibition: Johann Baptist Reiter in the Linz Castle Museum and in the Nordico together with Elisabeth Nowak-Thaller. Since 2012, Schultes has also been working increasingly as a photographer and giving lectures in the “Deep Space Live” of the Ars Electronica Center . He was married to the art historian Ulrike Schultes-Harhammer, who died in 2019.
