Life

Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon-Penthièvre was a grandson of Louis XIV from the connection with the Marquise de Montespan . His father was Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse (born June 6, 1678, † December 1, 1737).

As the last heir to all legitimate princes, the Duke was the richest private citizen in France. In 1737 he became Grand Hunter and Grand Admiral of France and Governor of Brittany. He also inherited the ownership of the regiments Penthièvre infanterie and Duc de Penthièvre cavalerie . He fought under Adrien-Maurice de Noailles in the Battle of Dettingen (1743), the Battle of Fontenoy (1745) and the Battle of Roucoux (1746).

After the War of the Austrian Succession , he retired to Sceaux Castle , where he campaigned for charity and interacted with writers such as Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian . In contrast to his daughter-in-law Marie-Louise of Savoyen-Carignan, Princess Lamballe , the Duke of Bourbon-Penthièvre was spared from outbreaks of violence during the revolution. He died, popularly, on March 4, 1793 as a Bourbon citizen in the Château de Bizy near Vernon and was buried in Dreux .

With the marriage of his daughter Marie Louise Adélaide de Bourbon to the Duke of Orléans , known as Citizen Egalité , the immeasurable goods and titles of the House of Penthièvre came to the Orléans family . In this, the son of the Prince of Joinville , Pierre Philippe Jean Marie d'Orléans received the title of Duke of Penthièvre.

A street near the Avenue des Champs-Élysées is named after him today (rue de Penthièvre) .
