Louis Palmer (* 1971 in Budapest ) is a Swiss environmental activist.

Life

Palmer grew up in Lucerne . After finishing school, he first became a teacher. After several trips, he started projects with solar energy . In 1996 he crossed the United States in an ultralight aircraft . For this experiment, he received the “Most Outstanding Flight of the Year” award from the American Ultralight Aircraft Association.

Projects

Solar taxi

In 2004, Palmer began building an electrically powered car that received its power from on-board and stationary photovoltaic modules . He called the vehicle a solar taxi . He circled the world in this car between 2007 and 2008. With the solar taxi he covered more than 54,000 km and drove through more than 40 countries. In 2008 the tour ended after 18 months in Lucerne. Meanwhile, his companion, Erik Schmitt, made a documentary film about the trip with the same title. A year later he won the European Solar Prize .

Zero Race

Palmer was the initiator and tour leader of the so-called Zero Race . The race took place between August 2010 and February 2011. The goal was to circumnavigate the world in 80 days to show that emission-free vehicles can do this. Through this race he again managed to gain attention for his vision of a sustainable life. In 2011 he was awarded the " Champion of the Earth " award by UNEP in the category of inspiration and action .

WAVE - World Advanced Vehicle Expedition

Organized by Palmer, this electric car rally started in Paris in 2011 and ended in Prague in September of the same year. Here he was accompanied by 25 electric cars from over eight countries. The event stopped in 30 cities with the intention of showing the public that electric cars are sustainable. All vehicles had to generate their own energy from renewable energy and feed this into the grid.

Since then, WAVE has taken place every year with an increasing number of participants. 112 teams took part in WAVE Switzerland 2017 for a distance of 1,600 km in 8 days. Pedelecs and other electric vehicles have now also been integrated. In 2019 there will be a WAVE Germany for the first time.

Switzerland Explorer / Switchbus

Together with his wife, Julianna Priskin, he founded the company Switzerland Explorer with the self-proclaimed goal of offering sustainable tours through Switzerland for groups and individual travelers with the world's first electric tour bus. An IVECO Daily from the German Armed Forces served as his base vehicle , which he had converted into an electric drive. The bus currently offers space for 16 people and has a range of up to 300 km. The tours mostly lead to the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch, to the Rhone Glacier or in a week around the whole of Switzerland.
