Luc Boltanski (born January 4, 1940 ) is a French sociologist. He is Research Director at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales , Paris. His main interests within sociology are questions of morality and politics. Originally a student of Pierre Bourdieu , he gradually distanced himself from him in the course of the 1980s. He is the brother of the artist Christian Boltanski . His son is the writer and journalist Christophe Boltanski .
In autumn 2008, Boltanski gave the Frankfurt Adorno Lectures with the title “Sociology and Social Criticism”.
Teaching
Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot have shown in their Sociology of Critical Judgment (2007, 2014) that the sphere of inspiration , where it is about enlightenment, spiritual perfection, inner movement and fantastic sublimity, in short the world of ideas of an individual person, is entirely different different rules than the spheres of familial tradition (family), public opinion (society), industrial operations (world of work) or the free market (world of goods) in which the same individual moves. None of these spheres merge into any of the others. Everyday life has to do with presentations, questioning, transitions and compromises within and between these spheres.
In doing so, the authors identify six orders of justification that are constitutive for our society today, which, seen from the history of ideas, have taken shape in works of political philosophy: that of inspiration with Augustine , the domestic sphere with Bossuet , fame and public opinion with Hobbes , the market with Adam Smith , Citizen with Rousseau and Industry with Henri de Saint-Simon . As the authors show using the example of a systematic analysis of management strategies, all of these 6 orders of justification can be present in specific areas of society at the same time and serve as a starting point and point of reference for the actors in their endeavors to understand and recognize others. They can also be used to explain many conflicts that arise when those involved, consciously or unconsciously, relate to different orders, i.e. mix them up.
