Luca Salvo Parmitano (born September 27, 1976 in Paternò ) is an Italian test pilot and astronaut .

Studies and the military

He completed his school education in 1995 at the Liceo Scientifico Statale in Catania . This was followed by a degree in political science at the University of Naples . At the same time he began his military training at the Air Force Academy in Pozzuoli , which he graduated in 2000. In the course of his military career he was trained as a test pilot and has completed over two thousand hours of flight time on numerous aircraft. In 2009 he received his diploma in experimental flight test technology, which he acquired at the Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace in Toulouse .

Astronaut activity

In the ESA selection process , Luca Parmitano prevailed against 8,413 other applicants and was presented to the public on May 20, 2009 as the new ESA astronaut together with five other people. The training at the European Astronaut Center (EAC) in Cologne began in September 2009. The official completion of the basic training and the appointment as an astronaut took place on November 22, 2010 at an official ceremony at the EAC in Cologne.

On February 18, 2011, the crews for ISS expeditions 36 to 39 were announced, with Parmitano assigned to ISS expeditions 36 and 37 . He was thus the first of his astronaut class to be assigned to a space flight. Together with Fyodor Jurtschichin and Karen Nyberg , he started on May 29, 2013 in the Soyuz TMA-09M spacecraft for the ISS to work for six months as a flight engineer.

On July 9, 2013, Parmitano carried out the first space exit by an Italian. During the second exit on July 16, water collected in Parmitano's helmet, whereupon the work was terminated prematurely. The water penetrated his eyes, ears and nose, so that Parmitano could neither see nor hear in the airlock until his helmet could be removed in the space station. The immediate cause was a clogged filter.

The return to earth took place on November 11, 2013.

On July 20, 2019, Parmitano embarked on its second mission with Soyuz MS-13 . After participating in the ISS expedition 60 , he took over the ISS command for the expedition 61 on October 2 . Parmitano was the first Italian ISS commander. After around 201 days in space, he landed on February 6, 2020 with Soyuz MS-13 in Kazakhstan . Parmitano's mission was called Beyond .

Award

On May 11, 2005, during a training flight over the English Channel, the cockpit glazing of his AMX Ghibli fighter aircraft was destroyed by a bird strike. Despite limited visibility and without radio support, Parmitano then managed to land safely on the base with the help of his colleague flying in formation. In 2007, Parmitano was awarded the “Medal for Flying Courage in Silver” ( Medaglia al valore aeronautico d'argento ) by the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano .

Private

Parmitano is married and has two daughters.
