Life

Lucas de Groot originally wanted to be a painter, but his work was already graphic in his school days in Noordwijkerhout. His collaboration as a school newspaper editorial member was also primarily of a graphic nature. From 1982 to 1987 he studied with Gerrit Noordzij at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, which is known for its writings. De Groot's focus during his studies was type design, photography and illustration. He used a prototype of his Thesis typeface , which was later perfected , at that time still called Paranthesis , with other typefaces he had designed himself in his thesis.

Between 1989 and 1993, Lucas de Groot worked on corporate design projects for the renowned design agency BRS Premsela Vonk . Here he also developed TheMix , the half- serif family of the thesis. Then he went to Berlin to MetaDesign , where he expanded and completed the thesis . A special, hitherto unknown feature of the thesis was its above-average wealth of symbols. In addition to various special characters and small caps , it contains typographic decorative characters such as arrows and leaves .

From the end of the 1990s, de Groot headed the Berlin type design office FontFabrik and his own type forge, LucasFonts . He also teaches as a professor of font design at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences . His Font Family thesis enjoys u. a. The meticulously coordinated line widths made it very popular, from which the grotesque variant TheSans in particular quickly developed into a modern classic. It has been and is used by corporations such as the Spanish Telefónica , the German grocery chain Plus and the broadcasting network ARD . He designed new fonts especially for the daily newspaper in 1996, as well as in 2007 for the Jungle World . From 2002 to 2004 he developed the Calibri and Consolas fonts for Microsoft Windows Vista .
