Prince Ludwig August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

Ludwig August Maria Eudes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (born August 9, 1845 at Eu Castle ; † September 14, 1907 in Karlsbad ) was a prince from the Catholic line of Saxe-Coburg-Koháry and an imperial Brazilian admiral .

Life

August was born the son of Prince August of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1818–1881) and his wife Clementine d'Orléans (1817–1907), daughter of the French King Louis Philippe .

On December 15, 1864, in Rio de Janeiro, he married Princess Leopoldina of Brazil , a daughter of Emperor Peter II. He and his cousin Gaston had been sent to Brazil so that the two princes should marry the daughters of Emperor Peter, with August originally being the Crown Princess Isabella should marry. The sisters finally decided in favor of the other with their father's consent.

After the marriage, August received the rank of admiral in the Brazilian fleet , after having already completed a naval training in Europe. In 1865 he successfully participated in Brazil's war against Paraguay . During the German war , August stayed with his family in Hungary to protect his interests. The Koháry branch was one of the largest landowners in Hungary. After the early death of his wife, August kept his leadership position in the Brazilian fleet and also the honorary presidency of the Historisch-Geographische-Gesellschaft, but increasingly returned to Europe. Here he dedicated himself to his passion for hunting, especially the shooting of chamois , where he set the world record of 3,412 animals.

At the world exhibition in Vienna in 1873 August represented the Brazilian branch. With his brother Philipp he undertook a world tour of several months in 1872/73, including to India and Hawaii . From May to August 1879 he took his brother Ferdinand on a trip to Brazil.

After the fall of the Brazilian monarchy in 1889, August served in the Austro-Hungarian Navy.

His two older sons were at times considered to be imperial Brazilian pretenders to the throne. August is one of the most famous German-Brazilians . He and his wife are buried in the so-called Koháry crypt of the St. Augustin Church in Coburg.
