The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights (BIM) is the largest Austrian human rights institute. It is an independent, non-university research institute that was founded in 1992 as an institute of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society (LBG). It is committed to research and teaching in the field of human rights .

history

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Human Rights was founded in 1992 by Felix Ermacora , Manfred Nowak and Hannes Tretter .

From 2014 until it was closed in 2018, there was close cooperation with the interdisciplinary “Research Center for Human Rights” of the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna . This in turn emerged from the research platform “Human Rights in the European Context”, which was set up in 2008 and coordinated by BIM.

International law expert Michael Lysander Fremuth has been the institute's scientific director since 2019 . He replaced Manfred Nowak, who has headed the institute since it was founded. Patricia Mussi-Mailer has also been the administrative director of the institute since 2019.

tasks

The institute is dedicated to human rights through research at national, European and international level. In addition, the focus of work is documentation and teaching, with BIM operating at the interface between theory and practice of human rights work. It is like the Austrian Institute for Human Rights in Salzburg , the European Training and Research Center for Human Rights and Democracy Graz and the European Training and Research Center for Human Rights and Democracy of the University of Graz, one of the institutions in Austria that is scientifically active in the field of human rights are active. It maintains extensive cooperation with international, intergovernmental and national institutions and organizations.

There is a cooperation agreement with the Institute for Constitutional and Administrative Law at the University of Vienna . The institute employs around 45 people.
