Ludwig Brefeld (born March 31, 1837 in Telgte ; † February 15, 1907 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a Prussian civil servant and Minister of Commerce from 1896 to 1901.

Life

Ludwig Brefeld studied law at the University of Bonn and became a member of the Marchia Bonn fraternity in 1854 . After the legal exam he was first a district judge. In 1867 he moved to the railway administration. During the Franco-Prussian War he was administrator of the railways in occupied France . In 1872 he became railway director in the railway department of the Prussian Ministry of Commerce. In the following years he rose to the top secret government council.

In 1879 Brefeld moved to the Ministry of Public Works. In 1881 he was appointed Ministerial Director. In 1895 Brefeld became Undersecretary of State and Chairman of the State Railway Council. From 1884 he was also a member of the State Council .

Between 1896 and 1901 he was Minister of Commerce. He was also an authorized representative to the Federal Council. Politically, he was close to the free conservatives .

As Berlepsch's successor , the appointment of Brefeld meant a departure from the company's socio-political course. Instead, Brefeld was a representative of heavy industrial interests. On the other hand, he soon came into conflict with various trade interest groups. The representatives of free trade criticized Brefeld's customs policy, which was favorable to heavy industry. From this side he was called "Minister Against Trade". In 1898 a district of Sulzbach was named after him.

family

Ludwig Brefeld's younger brother is the botanist and mycologist Oscar Brefeld (1839–1925).
