Ludwig Flamm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludwig Flamm (born January 29, 1885 in Vienna ; † December 4, 1964 there ) was an Austrian physicist .

Life

Ludwig Flamm, who came from a family of watchmakers, studied physics at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1909 under Friedrich Hasenöhrl with the dissertation Actual Wave Systems . Then he was assistant to Gustav Jäger at the Technical University of Vienna . In 1916 he completed his habilitation at the University of Vienna, received the venia legendi at the Technical University of Vienna and in 1919 an extraordinary professorship. From 1922 to 1956 Flamm was a full professor and head of physics at the Vienna University of Technology. He served as dean from 1929 to 1931 and as rector from 1930 to 1931. Wolfgang Kummer received his doctorate , among others .

Since 1928 Flamm was a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and from 1940 a full member .

Ludwig Flamm was married to Elsa, Ludwig Boltzmann's youngest daughter . His son Dieter Flamm (1936–2002) had been a professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Vienna since 1973.

Ludwig Flamm dealt with various areas of theoretical physics such as B. Schrödinger's wave mechanics and general relativity , so with a special Schwarzschild solution, the Flamm's paraboloid. In 1916 he first described solutions that lead to theoretical connections, so-called wormholes, in the space-time continuum .
