Ludwig Rotthowe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludwig Rotthowe (* 22. January 1937 in Telgte , † 18 October 2017 ibid ) was a German railway photographer of the 20th century. He worked full-time as a photographer, initially in Telgte and later in Münster . He had been retired since 2000.

Life and work as a photographer

Rotthowe began an apprenticeship as a photographer in Telgte in 1952, and in the same year he took his first train photos. Inspired by illustrated books of sophisticated landscape photography and the work of the railway photographers Jean-Michel Hartmann and Toni Schneiders , he developed his own style of photography. For him, it's not about individual vehicles, but above all about staging the railway in the landscape. Rotthowe used telephoto lenses at an early stage to enhance the picture's message.

Rotthowes first publications were landscape photographs in daily newspapers. Since 1964, his characteristic railway pictures have also appeared, first in magazines and later in books. In addition to numerous individual images in specialist books on various railway topics, four of their own illustrated books were also published.
