Ludwig Stiegler (born April 9, 1944 in Parsberg , Upper Palatinate ) is a German lawyer and former politician . He was a member of the Bundestag for the SPD from 1980 to 2009 and was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group from July to October 2002 , and one of its deputy chairmen from 1998 to 2007. From 2003 to 2009, Stiegler was also chairman of the SPD Bavaria .

Life and work

Ludwig Stiegler was born as the son of Ludwig and Walburga Stiegler from Vilshofen in 1944 in Parsberg. The father was a lime worker at the Maxhütte . Ludwig Stiegler grew up in Vilshofen near Rieden in the Upper Palatinate . After elementary school in Vilshofen, Stiegler attended the Claretians' Progymnasium in Weißenhorn from 1956 before he switched to the Erasmus Gymnasium in Amberg in 1960 . After graduating from high school in 1964, Stiegler initially signed up as a regular soldier in the German Armed Forces . In 1967 he resigned as a lieutenant in the reserve. He then began a study of jurisprudence , sociology and politics in Munich and Bonn , which he in 1973 with the first and 1976 with the Second Legal State Examination ended. He has been admitted to the Cologne Higher Regional Court since 1979 .

Ludwig Stiegler was married to Barbara Stiegler , has three children and lived in Weiden . He has been married to the literary scholar Birgit Göbel-Stiegler since 2003, and his life has moved to Berlin.

In 1960 Ludwig Stiegler first joined the Vilshofen JU branch, in 1964 Stiegler moved to the SPD. From 1999 to 2007 he was a member of the party executive committee, and from 2005 to 2007 he was also a member of the presidium of the SPD. From 1985 to 1993 and from 1997 to 2004 he was deputy state chairman of the SPD in Bavaria and from 2003 to 2009 state chairman , until 2004 initially managing director. From 1982 to 1997 he was chairman of the SPD regional district of Upper Palatinate . Stiegler was also chairman of the SPD sub-district Weiden - Neustadt - Tirschenreuth until 2009 .

Since 1980 he was a member of the German Bundestag . From 1987 to 1992 and from 1994 to 2005 he was chairman of the Bavarian SPD regional group in the German Bundestag . Since 1998 he has been a deputy chairman on the board of the SPD parliamentary group . When Peter Struck took over the Federal Ministry of Defense from the dismissed Rudolf Scharping , Stiegler followed him in July 2002 as chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. After the federal elections in 2002 , he had to hand over the office to Franz Müntefering in October of that year . From October 2002 to 2007 he was again deputy group chairman.

Ludwig Stiegler always entered the Bundestag via the Bavarian state list . His constituency was Weiden . His membership ended with the 16th German Bundestag in 2009. Stiegler had not run for the 17th electoral term .

criticism

In July 2002 he said that the opposition parties CDU and FDP did not have the right to criticize Federal Interior Minister Otto Schily in the context of the debate about the NPD ban , since their predecessor parties had ultimately helped Adolf Hitler to power.

In July 2005 he was criticized nationwide for a Nazi comparison when he said that the only thing that would come to his mind for the CDU program for the Bundestag election (“right of way for work”) was the motto of the National Socialist concentration camps, “ work makes you free ”.
