Ludwig von Löfftz
Ludwig von Löfftz (born June 21, 1845 in Darmstadt , † December 3, 1910 in Munich ) was a German painter .
Life
Löfftz learned the upholstery trade from 1862 and worked in this trade for six years before he was able to attend the art school in his hometown under Rudolf Hofmann , which he exchanged for the Nuremberg Academy of Art in 1870 and the Munich Art Academy in 1871 .
Here he found a teacher in Wilhelm Diez , under whose direction he made such progress that as early as 1873 he was able to send the genre painting The Walk to the Vienna World Exhibition . In 1874 he was appointed assistant teacher at the art academy, later appointed professor, and when Diez resigned from the management of the painting class, von Löfftz took over.

Of his works, which follow the Dutch and German masters of the 16th and 17th centuries in form and content, the following should be mentioned:
- 1875: Coming home from the hunt , Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt
- 1876: The cardinal playing the organ
- 1879: Avarice and love , the portrayal of a curmudgeon who is surrounded by lovers, reminiscent of Holbein and Quintin Massys
- 1882: Erasmus of Rotterdam
- 1883: the noble, deeply moving Pietà , for which he received the first medal at the Munich exhibition
- 1892: Peasant woman in her Sunday best , Städel Museum , Frankfurt
- 1898: Orpheus and Euridike , Neue Pinakothek , Munich
The purity and correctness of the drawing, masterful handling of the light and dark and a detailed characteristic combined with deep feeling are the advantages of his art.
