Ludwik de Laveaux , actually Stanisław Ludwik de Laveaux (born 9 jul. / 21st November  1868 greg. In Jaronowice ; † 5. April 1894 in Paris ) was a Polish painter who mainly lived in France and worked.

Life

The ancestors of Laveaux's father Lucjan immigrated to Poland from Lorraine in the 18th century .

After the early death of his mother, he attended school in Krakow. He then studied from 1884 to 1886 and then from 1888 to 1890 under Jan Matejko at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts . In between he attended the Munich Academy under Otto Seitz . During his studies in Kraków, he was a regular guest at Włodzimierz Tetmajer in what was then the Kraków suburb of Bronowice . He was also friends with Wincenty Wodzinowski and Stanisław Radziejowski .

Paris

In 1890 he moved to Paris, where he lived until his untimely death. Here he was close friends with the older Aleksander Gierymski . In 1891 he went on a trip to Brittany ; further trips took him to London and Oxford. His pictures have been shown at salons in Paris and at international art exhibitions (Vienna, Munich, Berlin). He sold many works to England and the USA. Nevertheless, he lived in poor conditions, which had an adverse effect on tuberculosis . In the heyday of his work he died at the age of 25. He was buried in the Cimetière de Pantin cemetery in Paris . A large part of his works is now in the possession of collectors, only individual pictures belong to the national museums in Krakow and Warsaw.

Laveaux was known for his love affairs, especially the affair with Countess Iwona Prośnieńską from Olkusz was a topic in society. His fiancée Maria Mikołajczyków was described by Stanisław Wyspiański in his play " Wesele ".

The main subjects of Laveaux were peasant women, villages, cities and seascapes. There are also some mountain landscapes and portraits. He painted in oil and gouache and was one of the modern artists. Laveaux attached great importance to light, which brought him close to impressionistic interpretations. In his work there are also influences of expressionism and symbolism .
