Luigi Agustoni

Luigi Agustoni (born January 16, 1917 in Kreuzlingen , Canton Thurgau , Switzerland ; † March 31, 2004 in Orselina near Locarno ) was a Swiss theologian , church musician and professor . His brother was the Curia Cardinal Gilberto Agustoni .

Life

Agustoni studied music, theology and musicology in Lugano , Milan and Rome . From 1945 to 1956 he was professor of Gregorian chant at the Theological Faculty in Lugano and organist at the Cathedral of Lugano. In Milan he worked from 1955 until his retirement in 1989 as a professor of Gregorian chant at the Pontificio Istituto Ambrosiano di Musica Sacra. Since 1957 he was also pastor of Orselina.

From 1979 to 1999 he was President of the International Society for the Study of Gregorian Chant ( AISCGre ). He was then appointed honorary president.

In 2001 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Pontificio Istituto di Musica Sacra in Rome .

meaning

As a student of Eugène Cardine, Agustoni was instrumental in the further development and dissemination of Gregorian semiology . He was also involved in implementing the resolutions of the 2nd Vatican Council on liturgical reform in Switzerland.
