Luis Alberto Monge Álvarez (born December 29, 1925 in Palmares , Alajuela , † November 29, 2016 ) was a Costa Rican politician of the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN). From May 8, 1982 to May 8, 1986 he was President of Costa Rica.

Life

Luis Alberto Monge was one of the founding members of the Partido Liberación Nacional in 1951 . He was later the Costa Rican ambassador to Israel . He proclaimed the active and continued neutrality of Costa Rica in the conflicts in Central America.

During his presidency he was able to achieve an extensive stabilization of the economy through various measures. In 1983 he promoted the San José Dialogue, which intensified relations between the European Community and Central America.
