from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lukas Furtenagel (also "Furttnagel") (* 1505 in Augsburg ; † before 1563 ) was a painter who worked in Augsburg and Halle an der Saale and who is documented that he portrayed Martin Luther in death.

Life

Lukas Furtenagel was the son of the Augsburg painter Jörg Furtenagel, who died in the year his son was born. From 1515 he completed an apprenticeship with Master Lienhart Hamer in Augsburg. He may later work temporarily in the Cranach workshop in Wittenberg . By 1538 at the latest he was active in Halle, from where he was called to Eisleben in February 1546 to portray the dead Martin Luther. According to contemporary accounts, Furtenagel drew a portrait of Luther already lying in the coffin , while previously a painter from Eisleben who was not known by name had portrayed Luther on his deathbed. Furtenagel received the master craftsman's license in autumn 1546 after his return to Augsburg. He was married and had offspring.

There are only a few paintings, drawings or prints that can be assigned to Furtenagel. His work includes a double portrait of his older colleague and master Hans Burgkmair and his wife from 1527 ( Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien ).
