Luke Air Force Base is a military airfield in the United States Air Force , which after the flying ace of the First World War and the support of the Medal of Honor Frank Luke was named. The airport is about seven miles west of the city of Glendale in the state of Arizona .

The Air Education and Training Command (AETC) is stationed at Luke AFB, where pilots are trained on the General Dynamics F-16 . For this purpose, a total of 170 aircraft of the type are assigned to the associations at the airport, which are distributed among the seven squadrons of the 56th Operations Group. F-16 training will move to Holloman in the coming years as Luke becomes the second F-35 Lightning II training facility.

During the Second World War, Luke was the largest training location for fighter pilots with 12,000 trained fighter pilots and for this reason earned the nickname “Home of the Fighter Pilot” in the American armed forces. Between 1957 and 1983 more than 2,000 members of the German air force were trained here on the F-84 (1957–1965) and F-104 “Starfighter” (1964–1983) models .
