Lumbee

Lumbee is the name of an American Indian tribe . The name Lumbee comes from the Lumber River (also Lumbee River ). Although descended from white Americans, blacks, and Native Americans, the Lumbee have been recognized as a Native American tribe in the US state of North Carolina since 1885 .

Demography and geographic location

With over 50,000 members, the Lumbee are the eighth largest Indian tribe in the United States and the largest in North Carolina. They are mainly located in the Robeson , Hoke , Cumberland and Scotland countries . The economic, cultural and political center of the tribe is the city of Pembroke in the state of North Carolina.

State recognition

The Lumbee have been recognized as a Native American ethnic group by the state of North Carolina since 1885. In 1956 the "HR 4656" or Lumbee Act was passed by Congress and signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower . The Lumbee Act largely recognized the Lumbee as indigenous people. The tribe was not fully recognized by the state as an Indian tribe and therefore had to forego financial state aid for the most part. Full state recognition for the tribe is currently being examined by the legislature.
