The Lystal or Gressoneytal (Italian: Valle del Lys or Valle di Gressoney , French: Vallée du Lys or Vallée de Gressoney , in the Walser German dialect Walleschu ) is a side valley of the Aosta Valley . The river Lys gives it its name . Historically, the valley has been shaped by the presence of the Walsers , especially in the Gressoney and Issime valleys .

geography

Seen from Piedmont up the valley, the Lystal is the first of the right side valleys of the Aosta Valley. It reaches the main valley at Pont-Saint-Martin . From the point of view of the direction of flow of the Dora Baltea , the valley lies on the orographic left side. In the north, the valley borders the Swiss canton of Valais on the watershed . Further to the west lies the Ayas Valley , another side valley of the Aosta Valley. To the east, the Lystal borders the provinces of Biella and Vercelli , where it is separated from the Valsesia valley system by the Monte Rosa massif .
